What Is Corporate Training?

"The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay," said Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company.

Corporate training, professional development, leadership training, cross training and mentorship are all ways of educating employees. Investing in the education and training of employees helps companies retain high-quality talent while helping boost individuals' job satisfaction. The benefit to the company is that it helps to raise overall expertise, makes the company a more attractive place to work, and helps with succession planning and corporate strategy.

Employees come from a variety of educational backgrounds and bring different levels of business experience. When a company invests in corporate training, it helps create a foundation of shared knowledge and skill that supports teamwork and fosters enthusiasm and loyalty.

Even well-educated and experienced employees benefit from corporate training. According to The Training Clinic, "many companies say that it takes 3-5 years to take a seasoned professional and make them productive." Leadership and communication skills are needed at all levels in a company, and formal classroom training is just one way to address those needs. Corporate training is also effective using videos, self-paced online classes, mobile options and more. As companies look for ways to provide training that is less intrusive and more flexible, they are less reliant on the traditional all-day classroom sessions and are finding more accessible ways to provide employee education.

What the Corporate Trainer Does

Every company is different, but there are some common responsibilities most corporate trainers have. Some companies may have existing training materials or may purchase courseware from a third-party vendor, but you can expect to have to update, edit and customize materials to suit your company's current needs. In many cases, you will be responsible for acquiring or developing training materials.

It's increasingly important that education and training professionals be technologically savvy and able to use technology in the classroom. Creating and managing webinars, podcasts and online learning systems is part of most corporate training programs today.

It's critical for a training professional to have excellent verbal and written communication skills along with good people skills. Most trainers work with all levels of employees and need to be perceptive and adaptable to all types of audiences. Flexibility is an important personality trait for a training professional.

The ability to implement and evaluate training programs — and adapt them based on student performance and feedback — is a skill that successful trainers share.

Becoming a Corporate Trainer

There are multiple paths into a career as a corporate trainer. A teaching background is excellent preparation for making the transition to corporate training, although it's not required. Many corporate trainers start out in human resources and develop training skills on the job.
