What do you want students to learn in your classes? What is the expected outcome?
The class focuses on monetary policy, fiscal policy, federal government regulation and the impact of all three on business operations. Students should be constantly aware of how central bank and government policy will impact the business operating environment.
Why did you start teaching?
It beats working for a living–and by "working"—I mean the other full-time jobs I had before I went back to school: dishwasher, short order cook, bartender, janitor, lawn sprinkler installer, construction laborer, fiberglass fabricator for sailboats, furniture delivery guy, working in a pool hall, etc.
And it feeds my endless curiosity.
What's the best advice that you have ever received?
I can't remember any great advice someone else has given me. The trouble with "great" advice from other people is that it rarely applies to your specific situation and/or is so general as to be self-evident or meaningless (i.e., make a plan, work hard, buy low and sell high, be all you can be, don't beat a dead horse, keep your nose clean, don't bring a knife to a gun fight, etc.).
I have, however, given myself "great" advice at times and the reason it has been "great" is because it was perfectly aligned with my world view and I could trust the validity of the facts underlying that advice.
What's the best advice you could give to online students?
My advice: Be very careful about taking advice from anyone else.
OK...if you want some advice, here is some general advice for students.
And some business-oriented advice from 45 successful people.
Hey, this is interesting. Sam Shank, who is 36 on that list of 45 people, has advice that paraphrases my own.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
Oh boy! This is a tough one. I could list a thousand. Start with 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Siddhartha, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Animal Farm, It Can't Happen Here, and Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in the business world?
Depends on how you measure success.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in business face today?
Remembering that just because something is legal or that everyone else is doing it doesn't make it right.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.
I'm a backpacker. Finished the entire Appalachian Trail that runs from North Georgia to the middle of Maine in 2013 (about 2,200 miles long). Since then been hiking sections of the Via Alpina trail system and other long distance trails in the Swiss Alps every summer.
