Master of Business Administration with an Emphasis in Accounting Online Requirements

Any individual with a bachelor’s degree with relevant undergraduate coursework and foundational proficiencies is eligible to apply for admission to the Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting online program. Admission to the program is selective and based on a combination of factors, including academic and professional achievement.

Admissions Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Official transcripts
  • No GMAT

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for admission:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution whose accrediting agency is included on the list of UWF-approved accrediting agencies
  • UWF will only accept credits from institutions whose accrediting agency is included on the list of UWF-approved accrediting agencies, outlined below:
    • Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) Western Association of Schools and Colleges
    • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
    • Middles States Commission of Higher Education (MSCHE)
    • New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
    • Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
    • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
    • WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)
  • Significant equivalent undergraduate coursework in accounting is required along with foundational proficiencies
  • Official transcripts (sent from a college or university directly to the Graduate School, bearing an official seal and signature) from all previously attended universities. Students who received their undergraduate degree from UWF do not need to provide UWF transcripts.

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher*
  • Professional résumé demonstrating appropriate employment at increasing levels of responsibility

  • Business course academic preparation

*If you have lower than a 3.0 GPA, you may still apply for consideration. Admission is based on a holistic review of credentials to assess the potential success of each applicant. Professional experience is determined on a case-by-case basis using a résumé and any requested supporting documents. Our admission committee evaluates an individual’s accomplishments, roles and responsibilities to determine the total number of years of professional experience. Normally, professional experience begins at the point of graduation; however, the University of West Florida may consider prior work experience based on type of experience.

Foundation coursework and prerequisites

An undergraduate business degree is not required for admission to the online MBA program. Approximately one-third of students enter the program with no prior business coursework. However, foundation-level proficiency in the major functional areas of business is required to be successful in the program. These include accounting, economics, statistics, management and marketing.

UWF offers accelerated MBA foundation courses for applicants to meet the foundational proficiencies necessary to begin MBA core courses. This series of 1.5 credit hour intensive modules covers essential foundational knowledge in each of the prerequisite business subjects. Another option is GEB 5535 MBA Foundations—a 3 credit hour, 7-week all-inclusive prerequisite course that is graded on a satisfactory-unsatisfactory basis.

For the Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting online, the curriculum consists of 36 semester credit hours. Students are able to select their own industry to ensure the knowledge and skills gained are applicable to current job responsibilities while preparing for new opportunities upon graduation.

An introductory MBA core course in which students must combine the practical skills and discipline of specific concepts in order to solve a complex, integrated real-life business problem. Serves as an initial integrating experience from which to launch students into the core MBA study.

Provides the background for beginning the MBA Portfolio. Gives introduction to information resources available to perform business problem analysis. Students learn to prepare a thorough analysis of their Portfolio industry.

Provides students with quantitative skills that are required to make business decisions. These skills involve using statistical, forecasting and estimation techniques. Students are expected to use the subject matter for problem sets and exams.

Appreciation and understanding of the field of organizational behavior and its application in managing human and other resources. Emphasizes understanding individual behavior (motivation, self-awareness, leadership, etc.) and group dynamics (decision-making, group development and work), plus conflict, climate, learning styles, power, stress, process/content, human rights and quality. Utilizes experiential learning methodologies and other appropriate designs. May not be taken for credit by students having credit for INP 6397.

Management control and behavior, control structures, responsibility accounting, cost/profit/investment centers, budgets and performance evaluation, control of projects, control in service, and non-profit organizations.

Concepts of competition as they relate to business management policies and practices; profit goals and measurement problems; multiple product policy; demand analysis; cost concepts; pricing problems; case studies. Contains a portfolio project.

Advanced treatment of investment and financing decisions of firms, emphasis on current theory and practice. Course contains a portfolio project.

Creation of enduring and mutually satisfactory customer relationships through the provision of customer value as an enterprise management philosophy. With consideration given to operating environments, the course is designed to teach the formulation, implementation, and control of comprehensive marketing strategy with emphasis on the integrative aspects of the marketing function in a market-based enterprise. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are used in applications oriented context. Contains a portfolio project.

Utilizes case analysis, a strategic simulation and other related experiential exercises. Integrates and applies the various business management functions from the strategic viewpoint of the organizational chief executive officer.

All students will take ACG 6805 and ACG 6856, and either TAX 5105 or BUL 5831, based on course availability.

A blend of traditional and contemporary accounting issues with focus on the development of financial accounting theory, the relationship of theory and research to standard setting, and discussion of current accounting standards. Examines the objectives, measurement models, controversies, and philosophy of financial accounting.

Advanced research, interpretation, and application of professional and ethical standards of auditing, assurance, attestation, and accounting and review services, including standards promulgated by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the United States Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, International Federation of Accountants, and the United States Government Accountability Office.

Study of selected topics in law pertaining to business transactions, business environment and associations, and financial securities. (Students may take TAX5105 in place of this course).

Federal income taxation of subchapter C corporations and their shareholders. Includes coverage of incorporation, income determination, income distribution, reorganization, liquidation, and tax preparers' legal and professional responsibilities. (Students may take BUL5831 in place of this course).
